HOA Board President – Job Description

Reports To: HOA Board of Directors (as a whole)

Position Overview:

The President of the HOA Board is the chief executive officer of the association, responsible for leading the board, setting priorities, and ensuring the effective operation and governance of the community. The President serves as the primary spokesperson for the HOA and works closely with the board, management company, legal counsel, and community members to uphold the governing documents, maintain transparency, and foster a thriving neighborhood.


Key Responsibilities:

  • Leadership & Governance: Provide overall leadership and strategic direction to the board and the HOA. Ensure all actions are consistent with the HOA’s bylaws, CC&Rs, and applicable laws.
  • Meeting Facilitation: Preside over all board meetings, annual meetings, and special sessions. Set agendas and ensure orderly conduct and inclusive discussion.
  • Board Coordination: Collaborate with board members to assign responsibilities, oversee progress, and maintain accountability.
  • Spokesperson Role: Act as the official representative of the HOA in communications with homeowners, management companies, legal entities, vendors, and local officials.
  • Oversight of Committees: Appoint committee chairs (with board approval if required) and oversee the activities of standing and ad hoc committees.
  • Conflict Resolution: Work to resolve disputes fairly and diplomatically between residents or board members when needed.
  • Project Leadership: Oversee execution of major initiatives such as budget planning, maintenance improvements, policy changes, and community engagement.
  • Assigned Committees: Serve on or oversee a designated committee. Active participation is required.
  • Meeting Attendance: The President is expected to attend all board and assigned committee meetings. Missing three (3) consecutive meetings without prior notice will be considered a voluntary resignation from the board.

Qualifications:

  • Must be a homeowner in good standing (no unpaid dues or unresolved violations).
  • Proven leadership, organizational, and communication skills.
  • Ability to manage meetings, delegate effectively, and make impartial decisions.
  • Familiarity with governing documents, HOA operations, and basic parliamentary procedure.
  • Prior experience on a board or leadership role strongly preferred.

Time Commitment:

  • Approximately 6–10 hours per month, with additional time as needed during peak activity periods such as annual meetings, budget cycles, or special projects.
